Designing For More Natural Light and Ventilation

Ex ‘The Block’ contestants Bec and George Douros alongside Nectaar (the couple’s home renovation and design consultancy business) have designed and built their forever home for their growing family.
Project ‘Alma’ is located in Williamstown, Victoria where the couple worked closely with architect Ben Robertson from Tecture to help bring their vision to life.
The project consists of a parent’s retreat overlooking the backyard and pool from the first level, and a beautifully designed entertaining space balanced with the practicality of living with kids on the ground level.
Careful consideration therefore went into the orientation of the home from the planning stages to ensure the main living space could capture north-facing light, without the glare from the sun. The selection of windows and doors also played a crucial role in ensuring their vision was brought to life.
This modern family home has harnessed abundant natural light and views of their surrounding natural scenery through the use of full height Trend Windows and Doors in the kitchen, open-plan living room and bedrooms.
The master bedroom overlooks a serene, green space to create a calming couple’s retreat. Breezway Louvre Windows feature in this room to provide cross ventilation and unique aesthetics, where Bec states “It feels like you’re waking up on holiday”.
Using full height windows in the boy’s bedroom also helps to create the feeling of spaciousness which is perfect for while they are still young and sharing. Obscure glass was selected for allowing filtered light while maintaining privacy in the bathroom.
Overall the dynamic duo are very pleased with how their vision has come to life through the selection of windows and doors to build a harmonious space that’s kid friendly and offers a much-needed quiet sanctuary for the couple.
